Answer:

1 ) bimetallic strip is used to convert a temperature change into mechanical displacement. The strip consists of two strips of different metals which expand at different rates as they are heated, usually steel and copper, or in some cases steel and brass.

When this bimetallic strip is heated, the brass expands more than the steel and the strip curves with the brass on the outside. If the strip is cooled, it curves with the steel on the outside. Bimetallic strips are used as switches in thermostats

ANSWER 2:

The advantages of thermal expansion expansion is as follows:

1) Sometimes it is difficult to remove stopper of bottle. To do the same one can easily by understanding the concept of thermal expansion. Only you have to do is heat the part of the bottle where stopper is fixed. Because of the expansion in that part, it is very easy to open that bottle.

2) The understanding of the basic concept is highly useful in fixing iron rim with the wooden wheel.

3) We know that rivets are very simple useful tool which is used to hold the steel plates together. The technology here is that the hot rivet is pushed or pivoted through the two plates and then its top is hammered over. And finally when the rivet is in cool position then we get the result that is the two plates are together very tightly.

So this explains the advantages of thermal expansion expansion.

4) Bimetallic strip phenomenon is also occurred because of the basic concept of thermal expansion. The reason for the same is that the different metals expansion is different. For example brass expands much more than the iron.

DISADVANTAGE ARE :

  1. change in shape and dimension of objects such as doors
  2. walls collapsing due to bulging
  3. bursting of metal pipes carrying hot water or steam
