Lichens are amazing species which are helpful to us than we can imagine. In primary succession lichens conquer a bare rock and secrete acids which dissolve the rock and convert the rock into small pieces of fragments which helps in soil formation. this fertile soil later helps in growth of small plants.
With time the small plants are succeeded by higher plants and finally a stable forest is formed. so in primary succession without lichens a forest cannot be formed.
Lichens play a vital role in forming the forest community. In the absence of lichens Primary succession does not occur.
