The Numbers are:

x = 168

y = 96

Explanation:

Given :

  • let the two numbers are in the ratio are \sf \frac{x}{y}  =  \frac{7}{4}
  • let their differences are
  • \sf x - y\: = \:72---- eqn (1)

Now by using...

\sf \frac{x}{y}  =  \frac{7}{4}

\sf 4x \:=\: 7y

\sf y =  \frac{4x}{7}

❀ Substitute 'y' value in eqn (1)

\sf x- \frac{4x}{7}   = 72

\sf \frac{7x - 4x}{7}  = 72

\sf \frac{3x}{7}  = 72

\sf 3x = 504

\sf x =  \frac{504}{3}

\sf x = 168

❀ Now substitute 'x' value in eqn (1)

\sf \: 168 - y = 72

\sf \sf y =   96

Verification:

\sf x - y = 72

\sf 168 - 96  = 72

\sf 72 = 72
