Assume total strength of the class is x
According to the given question,
Number of people who got first class is one fifth of whole +16 implies (x/5)+16
Number of people with second class is (x/4)+15
Number of people with third class is (x/4)-25
Given that there are 60 guys remaining and they all failed
So total strength of the class can also be obtained by adding
first class+ second class+ third class+ failure
which is x/5+16+x/4+15+x/4-25+60
simplifying we get (7x/10)+66
and we assumed the total to be x
so equating both, we get (7x/10)+66=x
implies 3x/10=66
implies x is 220
so the total number of candidates appeared is 220
