The phenotype is due to non expression of recessive alleles in the presence of their dominant alleles.

A cross between parent with your dominant and recessive traits produce is hybrid or F1 generation individuals with dominant trait only but on self fertilization The F2 generation comes to have both individuals with dominant and recessive traits in the ratio. obviously F1 generation individuals have received the recessive trait but the same is unable to express yourself in the presence of dominant trait.
