Answer question numbers 3(a) - 3(d) on the basis of your understanding of the
following paragraph and the related studied concepts:
The splitting of a beam of white light to its seven constituent colours, when it passes
through a glass prism is called the dispersion of light. When a beam of white light
enters a prism, it gets refracted and splits into the seven constituent colours, viz.
violet, indigo, blue, green, yellow, orange and red. This splitting of the light-ray
occurs because of the different refractive indices offered by the medium for each
colour. As one may recall, the refractive index for violet is more than the red colour.
Hence each colour while passing through the prism bends at different angles with
respect to the incident beam. This gives rise to the formation of the coloured spectrum
- VIBGYOR.
(a) What is the cause of dispersion of light by prism?
(b) Which colour of white light suffers least deviation when a beam of white light
is passed through the prism?
(c) Light of two colours A and B pass through a prism. A deviates more than B
from its path of incidence. Which colour has more speed in the prism?
(d) Show the path of white light incident on one prism as it emerges out of an
identical second prism as white light with the help of a diagram.

Answer:
Dispersion of Light’ can be defined as the splitting of white light when it passes through a glass prism into its constituent spectrum of colors (i.e. violet, indigo, blue, green, yellow, orange and red). Dispersion figuratively means ‘distribution’ and hence that’s exactly what is happening in the picture above. The white light splits into its constituent colors at various frequencies and various angles.
Answer:
Ans a)When light passes through a prism, the different frequencies of light travel at different velocities. Because of refraction, the different velocities make the angles of refraction different, causing the light to travel in slightly different directions.
Ans b) Wavelength is inversely proportional to the deviation in the path of the light. Red light suffers the least amount of deviation and violet the most. When a white light is made to pass through a prism, formation of a spectrum of seven colors occurs showing white light is a combination of seven separate colours.
Ans c) The colour having least deviation will have less velocity...Therefore answer is A
