Edward Wilson was the Sociobiologist who popularised the term 'Biodiversity'. He even described different levels of Biodiversity . There are more than 50,000 strains or rice in India which is an example of Genetic Diversity.

  • Genetic diversity is the diversity at the genetic level.  It enables a population to adapt to its environment.

India has more than 50,000 genetically different strains of rice and 1,000 varieties of mango.

  • Species diversity is diversity at the species level.

The Western Ghats have a greater amphibian species diversity than the Eastern Ghats.

  • Ecological diversity is the diversity at ecosystem level.

India with its deserts, rainforests, mangroves, coral reefs, wetlands, estuaries and alpine meadows has a greater ecosystem diversity.
