see let's take the students be y and bench be X

so according to the given condition

3 students sit on one bench and one student is left so. the equation will be

3x+1=y ------(i)

according to second condition

4 students sit on one bench and 1 bench is vacant

so the equation will be

4(x-1)=y

let's simplify

4x-4=y---(ii)

now let's solve it

place the value of y in eq i

we get

3x+1=4x-4

3x-4x=-1-4

-x=-5

x=5

substitute X=5

in eq ii

4(5)-4=y

20-4=y

y=16

so the no. of students is 16 and the no.of bench is 5
