1) non metals react with oxygen to form non metallic oxides. the burn remained Ash when added with little water and when tested on blue litmus paper then the blue litmus will be changed into red litmus hence we can say that non metallic oxides are called acidic.

2) metals react with oxygen to form metallic oxide . when the burned remained Ash is tested on red litmus turns red litmus paper will be changed into blue litmus paper hence we can say that metal oxides are basic.
