Answer:

40 km/hr

Step-by-step explanation:

let the speed of car = x kmph

given, distance covered by the car = 240 km

time taken = Distance / Speed

=> t = d / s = 240 / x

given, speed increased by 20 kmph, then time taken is 2 hrs less.

s = x + 20 , d = 240 ,

As per given data, 240 / x - 240 / x+20 = 2

=> 240 ( x+20 - x) / x(x+20) = 2

=> 20 / x²+20x = 2 / 240

=> x²+20x = 2400

=> x²+20x-2400 = 0

=> x²+60x-40x-2400 = 0

=> x(x+60) - 40(x+60) = 0

=> (x+60) (x-40) = 0

=> (x+60) = 0 or (x-40) = 0

=> x = -60 or x = 40

but speed will not be negative => x = 40 kmph

.•. speed of the car = 40 km/hr
