To Find:

x=?

Solution:

x+1/x=17/4

→ x²+1/x=17/4

→ x²+1=17x/4

→ 4( x²+1)=17x

→ 4x²+4=17x

→4x²-17x+4=0

→Now comparing the above equation with ax²+bx+c=0

a=4 , b=-17 and c=4

b²-4ac=(-17) ²-4×4×4

= 289-64

=225

Now , by formula method,

x= -b±√b²-4ac/2a

x=17±225/8

x=17+225/8 or x=17-225/8

x=242/8or x=-208/8

x=121/4 or x= -108/4= -27
