There are numerous methods but they break down to just a few categories. Abstinance is the onlt absolutely sure method but I would lump it with the rhythm method, one of the worst. Barrier methods are common (condom, diaphragm), as are chemical ones, such as The Pill and contraceptive jellies. Would you believe that the Romans used to think that peas would work. Thet don't. Related to the chemical controls are the "clean-up methods, such as the "Morning-After" pill and abortion. Coitus interruptus is pretty much by itself (and a good path to pregnancy).As to why. ask yourself whether you would want to become a parent right now.
