Answer:

1.) Librarian Mrs Phelps is the very first adult to encourage Matilda's love of reading and to hand her her first story for adults. Matilda is just four years and three months old, and the story Mrs Phelps picks is Great Expectations by Charles Dickens. It's very famous and very good.

Matilda Wormwood is a bibliophile, which is a person who really loves books! As the main character in the Roald Dahl book, Matilda, she has read many classics, which are books that have been read by many people over a long period of time. They may not be new books, but they are ones that people still enjoy today because they are well-written and tell timeless stories that are still meaningful many years after they were first published. Classic books are enjoyed over and over again by new generations of readers, who still find the books to be interesting and meaningful.

Even though Matilda's family only owned one book, Matilda learned to read at the age of three. The first adult book Matilda read was Great Expectations by Charles Dickens. Mrs. Phelps, the librarian suggested this book when Matilda said she wanted to read ''a really good one that grown-ups read. A famous one.''

Because Matilda does not have a happy life at home, she uses reading and books as a way to escape from her parents and from her loneliness; the books take her to imaginary or far away places and long ago times. Matilda also does not have a very fun time at school, so reading helps take her to places and worlds in which she can have a wonderful time. The characters in the books she reads become her friends, and through the stories, she learns about life beyond the walls of her family's home.

2.) Matilda takes place in an English village, and more specifically, at Matilda's home, school, and briefly, at Miss Honey's cottage in the country. In the village, there is one school for children ages five to almost twelve years old, a public library, a grocery store, a butcher, and a bank. All of these are close enough that Matilda can walk to them from her house. Matilda lives with her parents in a nice two-story, three-bedroom house, with a kitchen, living room and dining room on the main floor.

Crunchem Hall Primary School, a place of great wonder and horror, is dominated by Miss Trunchbull, the headmistress. Matilda's classroom, taught by Miss Honey, is a peaceful enough place, except for the one hour per week that Miss Trunchbull takes over. Then, it is just as terrifying as The Trunchbull's office, which is home to a terror contraption called 'the chokey.' The chokey is a tall box for misbehaving children that is covered on the inside with shards of glass and spiked nails so the occupant cannot lean over or sit down. There are also scenes in the schoolyard and the school's assembly hall.

Miss Honey's cottage is not like Matilda's home at all.
