Robert hooke in 1665 discovered cell.He saw that the cork resembled the structure of a honey comb consisting of many little compartments.Robert hooke made this observation through microscope.He called these boxes as cells and thus he discovered cell.
 cell is called structural unit because body of all organisms is made up of cells.It is functional unit of life because all the functions(physiological,biochemical,genetic and others)are carried out by the cells.
