ANSWER

1. (d) magnetic compass

2. (a) it contains iron

3. An iron nail can be magnetised by a bar magnet by a process of single touch method. In this method, one pole of a bar magnet is used to stroke the iron nail held firmly on a surface.

4. Magnets must be kept with magnetic keepers becouse the magnetic keepers help prevent the magnet from loosing its magnetism. It is placed across the poles of a permanent magnet to help preserve the strength of the magnet by completing the magnetic circuit.

5. (a) A freely suspended magnet always rests in the north-south direction because the magnetic south pole of the earth lies in the geographic north direction and the magnetic north pole of the earth lies in the geographical south direction. So that's the reason why bar magnet always points in north south directions.

(b) Electric motors used in fans and Television are the two commonly known gadgets we use at home, which have magnets.

6.(a) Firstly, one must know that like poles repel each other and unlike poles attract each other. In that case, if north of poles of both the magnets lie on same sides, the the magnets will repel each other.

(b) You can think of a magnet as a bundle of tiny magnets, called magnetic domains, that are jammed together. Each one reinforces the magnetic fields of the others. Each one has a tiny north and south pole. If you cut one in half, the newly cut faces will become the new north or south poles of the smaller pieces.

7. (a) Magnets are used to make a tight seal on the doors to refrigerators and freezers. They power speakers in stereos, earphones, and televisions. Magnets are used to store data in computers, and are important in scanning machines called MRIs (magnetic resonance imagers), which doctors use to look inside people's bodies.

(b) No, strong magnet will not attract a piece of copper because it does not contain any iron content in it.

(c) One precaution you should always take while handling a magnet is not to drop it because when magnets are dropped down to the floor, the impact of the drop weakens their magnetism.
