Define reflection of light.
Light travels in a straight line but when light strikes an opaque object, it bounces off from its surface. When this light reaches our eyes, we are able to see the object. This bouncing of the light from the surface of an object is called reflection of light.
- We are able to see the objects around us like the table, books etc. because light bounces off their surfaces.
- We are table to see the hills, clouds, buildings, flowers, etc. because they all reflect light.
- Mirror is the shining polished surface that reflects most of the light that falls on it and produces an image. This is why we are able to see our face in the mirror.
- Reflected light can be reflected again to form images such as in a barber shop to see the back of our head.
- Periscope is an optical device in which reflected light is reflected again to form an image.
- Kaleidoscope is a simple toy based on reflection of light from many broken pieces of mirrors to form colourful patterns.
