a) The distance by which bus B was ahead of bus A initially is 20 km.

b) Bus A and bus B will meet each other at 60 km which is after 9 hours.

c) The distance travelled by bus A when it overtakes bus B is 60 km.

d) The distance by which bus A was ahead of bus B at t = 12 h is 10 km

e) Bus A is faster than bus B.

Given: A distance-time graph.

To Find:

a)distance by which bus B was ahead of bus A initially

b)do they ever meet each other? if so when

c)distance travelled by bus A when it overtakes bus B

d)distance by which bus A was ahead of bus B at t = 12 h

e)which one of them is moving faster

Solution:

a) From observation, we can see that the straight line corresponding to B is starting from 20 km.

So, the distance by which bus B was ahead of bus A initially is 20 km.

b) The intersection of the two straight lines A and B tells us that bus A and bus B will meet each other.

They will meet each other at 60 km which is after 9 hours.

c) We see that bus A overtakes bus B just after they meet each other as before then bus B was leading.

So, the distance travelled by bus A when it overtakes bus B is 60 km.

d) We observe from the graph that,

At t = 12 h, distance by which bus A = 80 km

At t = 12 h, distance by which bus B = 70 km

So, the distance by which bus A was ahead of bus B at t = 12 h = ( 80 -70)

                                                                                                         = 10 km

e) To see, which bus is moving faster, we need to find their speed which is calculated by finding the slope for the straight lines corresponding to buses A and B respectively.

Slope of A = distance/time = 80/12 = 6.67 m/s

Slope of B = distance/time = 70/12 = 5.83 m/s

So, bus A is faster than bus B.

Compiling all the answers, we get;

a) The distance by which bus B was ahead of bus A initially is 20 km.

b) Bus A and bus B will meet each other at 60 km which is after 9 hours.

c) The distance travelled by bus A when it overtakes bus B is 60 km.

d) The distance by which bus A was ahead of bus B at t = 12 h is 10 km

e) Bus A is faster than bus B.
