Question (1)

The difference between two numbers is 8. If 2 is added to the bigger number the result will be three times the smaller number. Find the numbers.

Solution (1)

Let, two numbers are x and y , in which x is bigger

then,

→ difference of numbers = 8

→ x - y = 8

→ x = 8 + y   _____equation (1)

and,

→ bigger no. + 2 = 3 × smaller number

→ x + 2 = 3 y

using equation (1)

→ 8 + y + 2 = 3 y

→ 10 + y = 3 y

→ 10 = 2 y

y = 5

putting this value in equation (1)

→ x = 8 + y

→ x = 8 + ( 5 )

x = 13

therefore,

  • Two numbers are 5 and 13 .

Question (2)

What are those two numbers whose sum is 58 and difference is 28.

Solution (2 )

Let, two numbers are x and y

then,

→ sum of numbers = 58

→ x + y = 58

→ x = 58 - y ___equation (1)

And,

→ Difference of numbers = x - y

→ x - y = 28

using equation (1)

→ 58 - y - y = 28

→ 30 = 2 y

y = 15

putting value of y in equation (1)

→ x = 58 - y

→ x = 58 - ( 15 )

x = 43

therefore,

  • Two numbers will be 15 and 43.

Question (3)

The sum of two consecutive odd numbers is 56. Find the numbers.

Solution (3)

Let, two consecutive odd numbers be

x and x + 2 , then

→ x + x + 2 = 56

→ 2 x + 2 = 56

→ 2 x = 54

x = 27

so, the second odd number will be,

→ x + 2 = 27 + 2 = 29

Therefore,

  • Two consecutive odd numbers having 56 are 27 and 29.

Question (4)

The sum of three consecutive multiples of 7 is 777. Find these multiples.

Solution (4)

Let, three consecutive multiples of 7 be

x , x + 7 , x + 14

then,

→ x + x + 7 + x + 14 = 777

→ 3 x + 21 = 777

→ 3 x = 777 - 21

→ 3 x = 756

x = 252

Therefore,

  • Three consecutive multiples of 7 suming up to 777 are :
  • 252 , 252 + 7 and 252 + 14 that are 252 , 259 and 266.
