Yes, huge difference! For example, if you go to the side of your house and lean on it, however lightly you are leaning you are essentially applying force on the structure of your house. However, as long as you live in the usual type of a house a lot of people in the world do, and not in a house which will collapse as soon as you touch it… your house will not move or in physics terms: there will be no net displacement. If there is no displacement of the object to which you are applying a force- you are doing no work! This is exactly like studying and reading relate to each other: if you are reading something, no matter how many times you read it, if you don’t learn what you are reading- then you are not studying.
