Answer:

Sand and Water - Mixture

Sand and Iron Filings - Mixture

Concrete - Mixture

Water and Oil - Mixture

Salad- Mixture

Water - Compound

Carbon Dioxide - Compound

Cement- Compound

Alcohol - Compound

Explanation:

A mixture consists of two or more substances (elements and or compounds) which are physically combined together in variable proportions. Each component retains its own individual properties and is not chemically bonded to any other component of the mixture.

Any mixture possesses certain general characteristics:

• Its composition can vary.

• Its properties are variable because its component parts keep their individual properties.

• Its component parts can be separated by physical means

A compound is a pure substance that is formed from two or more different types of elements which are chemically bonded together in fixed proportions and in a way that their properties have changed.

Sample Explanations (most of them are similar for mixtures, because you are just 'physically' combining them)

1. Sand and water - mixture because sand and water components can be separated physically (e.g. like filtration) and they are only physically mixed.

2. Sand and Iron Fillings - mixture because sand and iron are not chemically combined and can be separated by physical means (such as using a magnet to attract the iron fillings and leave the sand back)

3. Concrete -  concrete is a mixture of paste and aggregates, or rocks.

4. Water and Oil - water and oil together form a mixture not a compound. they are immiscible in each other ( i.e. do not mix together). they can be separated by using a separating funnel.

5. Salad - A salad is a great example of mixtures. There are tomatoes, lettuce, cucumbers, and salad dressing all mixed together. No chemical reactions occur between the vegetables and the dressing, hence a mixture.

6. Water - Water, H2O, is a pure substance, a compound made of hydrogen and oxygen 'chemically combined'.

7. Carbon Dioxide - Carbon dioxide (CO2 ) is a chemical compound composed two oxygen atoms covalently bonded to a single carbon atom. They are chemically joined hence a compound.

8. Cement - this is actually a compound as it is one single pure substance that helps to form concrete. It is actually chemically combined with other elements (check image below, it has the components of cement)

9. Alcohol - alcohol is an organic compound that carries at least one hydroxyl functional group (−OH) bound to a saturated carbon atom. Alcohol is formed by chemically by combing oxygen, hydrogen and carbon. Hence, it is a compound.
