1. Sid was panic stricken when he saw his half-brother Tom groaning and moaning in pain. He rushed downstairs to Aunt Polly and told her to rush to Tom immediately as Tom was dying.
Aunt Polly initially brushed it aside as rubbish but nevertheless she rushed upstairs to see Tom and was panic stricken for a while to see the boy tossing in pain. For a while her blood turned cold.
2. Tom had cooked up a story to escape from going to school. He had decided to fool his Aunt by saying that his toe was mortified as he had once heard a doctor talking of such an ailment.
However he was not sure of the details so when he told his Aunt of this his Aunt burst out laughing. This made Tom feel a little foolish.
Aunt Polly told Tom that he had initially given her a shock. He should stop all the nonsense and get out of it. Tom should get ready for school.
3. When Tom's next excuse was of his loose tooth that was giving him a tooth ache, Aunt Polly decided to pull it out.
4. Aunt Polly helped Tom get rid of his tooth by asking Mary to get her a silk thread, and a chunk of fire out of the kitchen.
She then most dexterously fastened one end of the silk thread to Tom's tooth by making a loop while the other end she tied to the bedpost. Then she caught hold of the chunk of fire and all of a sudden thrust it as if into the boy's face. The tooth was extracted and it hung dangling by the bedpost.
