  1. Local self-government means that residents in towns, villages and rural settlements are the hosts in their own home. People elect local councils and their heads authorising them to solve the most important issues.
  2. The sarpanch1 and gram panchayat are responsible for the overall development of the village and play a key role in providing basic services vital for the health and well-being of rural people, like, drinking water and sanitaon.
  3. Regulation of land-use and construction of buildings. Planning for economic and social development. Water supply for domestic, industrial and commercial purposes. Public health, sanitation conservancy and solid waste management.
  4. A municipal corporation is made up of a wards committee. Each ward has one seat in the wards committee. Members are elected to the wards committee on the basis of adult franchise for a term of five years. These members are known as councillors or corporators.
  5. The Municipal Corporation collects taxes on houses, water, entertainment, parking, etc. to earn money. It also gets some grant from the government.
