Censorship was imposed on the Indian press by the colonial government to tide down the spirit of nationalism amongst the masses. In 1878, the vernacular press act was passed by the colonial government because the local newspapers were printing articles against the government. The vernacular press act gave the right to the government to censor reports and seize editorial reports written against the government. No, censorship was not effective in controlling nationalistic feelings in india. It was because despite the government control, there was an increase in number of newspapers in India. They reported about the colonial misgovernment and fuelled nationalist sentiments in India.

Censorship on press is the action of monitoring information and determining that it should be broadcasting, televised or published or not, this kind of process is done for different reason such as privacy of the person or threat on the national security, Although censorship on the press has its cons also such as:

1. It promotes manipulation for personal gain.
2. It limits education and awareness.
3. It encourages ignorance.
4. It takes away the freedom of speech.
