One day, Akbar hurt his finger while cutting an apple. Everybody sympathised with Akbar. But Birbal said: “Jahanpanah, all that happens, happens for the best.”

Akbar raised his heavily bandaged finger: “Birbal, you fool! How can cutting my finger be good?”

“It is, Your Highness. You will only realise this later,” Birbal said coolly.

The Emperor lost his temper: “Guards! Throw Birbal into prison. That will be the best for him!”

So without committing any crime, Birbal was jailed.

The next day, Akbar went hunting. Around a dozen courtiers went along. Akbar and his group killed many animals in the jungle. In the afternoon, the group stopped for rest. Suddenly, Akbar spotted a deer. Getting up quickly, he chased it. Within minutes, he went some distance away from his group. Soon, he was lost. The hunting party also looked desperately for their Emperor. But they failed to find him.

Unfortunately, a tribe of savages found Akbar. They caught the Badshah and tied him up. Soon, they decided to sacrifice him to their rain god. This would ensure they received good rainfall that year. So they bathed Akbar’s body for the sacrifice. While doing so, they noticed his injured finger. They immediately began whispering amongst themselves. The plan for a sacrifice was dropped. If an injured man were sacrificed, their rain god would be angry. So they were forced to release Akbar.

The Emperor quickly returned to the city. At the palace, the hunting party was waiting worriedly.
