Childhood is the theme of novel 'Swami and Friends'.Swami and friends is the story of a 10-year-old boy.The central theme of the novel is growing up of young Swami.He is a student of Albert Mission School.He is a spontaneous,impulsive,mischievous and yet a very innocent child.
The present extract describes what happened one day in the classroom.
The head master entered the class with a flushed face and a hard ominous look.He wanted to punish the mischievous children and read out the names of a dozen students angrily.Swami was one of them.The headmaster gave them a lecture to correct their misbehavior. He asked them whether they were not ashamed of what they had done the day before.He insisted on explanations from those who were absent yesterday.He made the students stand on the desks.The students told lies to escape from the headmaster's anger.But the headmaster knew why they did not come to school yesterday.So he scolded them and gave them blows with a cane.The first student started saying that he had been coming to school on the previous day,someone told him that there would be no school,and he had gone back home.The headmaster replied that if he was going to listen to every loafer who said that there would be no school,he deserved to be flogged.Anyway,why did not come to school and verify?No answer.The punishment was announced:ten days attendance cancelled,and whole day to be spent on on the desk.Second student said that his grandmother died suddenly just as he was starting to school.The headmaster asked him if he could bring a letter from his father.No he had no father.Then,who was his guardian?His grandmother.but grandmother was dead,was she not?No.It was another grandmother.The headmaster asked how many grandmothers can a person could have.No answer.Could he bring a letter from his neighbours?no,he could not.The neighbours could not read or write because he lived in a illiterate street.The headmaster offered to send a teacher to his illiterate locality to ascertain from the boy's if the death of grandmother was a fact.A Pause,Some perspiration,and then the answer that the neighbours could not possibly know anything about since the grandmother died in the village.The headmaster hit him on the knuckles with his cane,called him a street dog,and pronounced the punishment:30 days suspension.Why did you keep away yesterday?asked headmaster,looking up Swami.Swami first impulse was to protest that he had not absent .but the attendance register was there."No-no-I was stoned. I tried to come to school,but they took away my cap and burnt it they are Dacca Muslin-slaves of slaves ......."These were some of the disjointed explanations which streamed into his head even at that moment,he discreet not to express.He had wanted to mention he had a attack of headache,but he found to distress that other beside him had one.The headmaster shouted.He brought the cane sharply on Swami right shoulder.Swami kept staring at headmaster with tearful eyes,massaging with his left hand where the cane was laid.'I WILL KILL YOU IF YOU KEEP ON STARING'shouted headmaster.Swami kept foolishly till he received another whack.no chance to escape because he had broken the ventilators of headmasters room unfortunately while playing.It was proved by peon.He had unconsciously become defiant and did not care to deny any charge.When another whack came on his back,he ejaculated'don't beat me sir it pains'Headmaster became anger and beat him continuously without stopping.Swami can't bear it.He told again 'Sir it pains'.Then headmaster said,'Keep standing here,on the desk,staring like an idiot,till i announce your dismissal'.Swami cant bear this whacks and insult any more and decided to leave school and told to headmaster that "I don't care for your dirty school " and rushed back to home.
