2.The term biodiversity hotspot specifically refers to 25 biologically rich areas around the world that have lost at least 70 percent of their original habitat.
3.The remaining natural habitat in these biodiversity hotspots amounts to just 1.4 percent of the land surface of the planet, yet supports nearly 60 percent of the world's plant, bird, mammal, reptile, and amphibian species.
4.India is one the them because we have definitely lost most of our natural habitat due to man- made destruction.
Answer:
A biodiversity hotspot is defined as a specific region that has very high levels of biodiversity that is threatened by the habitation of humans.
As India is the home of largely varying flora and fauna, experts opine that the nation is the home of very high biodiversity. It hosts 4 biodiversity hotspots: the Himalayas, the Western Ghats, the Indo-Burma region and the Sunderbans (Includes Nicobar group of Islands). These hotspots have numerous endemic species. However India considered as a mega biodiversity hotspot as the population growth and present population of India is extremely high, and this along with growing urbanization has led to the threatening of habitat loss of such diverse flora and fauna. Natural habitat becomes incapable of supporting its native species. The organisms that previously inhabited the site are displaced or die, thereby reducing biodiversity and species abundance. Other important causes of habitat destruction include mining, logging, trawling, and urban sprawl.
