The amount of water vapour decreases rapidly with the altitude because -

• The source of the water vapour in the air is the water bodies present on the land surface which gets evaporated due to atmospheric temperature and in this way the water vapour gets added into the air.

• But,in the higher altitudes the temperature gets deceased and the necessary temperature for the vaporization is not available.

Also, the amount of water bodies is less in the higher altitudes.

• The air which contains water vapour also gets decreased in amount with the increasing altitude.

• For all the above mentioned reasons the water vapour gets decreased with the increasing altitude.
