Windows was considered inauspicious and a widow was forced to lead a secluded life.Widow were not allowed to remarry and work of ostracised during festivals and wedding as a bad Omen. However, Governor General Lord Dalhousie appreciated the effort of reformers and the widow remarriage Act was passed in 1856. Raja Ram Mohan Roy, Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar , Dayanand Saraswati and some social reformers who took in interest in improving the conditions.
