1. Explain the location, structure, types and functions of endoplasmic reticulum.
Answers
Answer:
1. A large network of membrane-bound tubes and sheets together form endoplasmic reticulum.
2. ER is covered over by membrane which is similar to plasma membrane.
3. ER is in two forms, viz. rubles and vesicles.
4. ER is of two types, viz. rough ER or RER and smooth ER or SER.
5. RER looks rough due to ribosomes attached over it. Ribosomes are sites of protein synthesis.
6. SER lack ribosomes. They synthesize lipids.
7. Proteins and lipids are useful in building cell membrane. This process is called membrane biogenesis.
8. Some properties and lipids from enzymes and hormones.
Functions of ER
1. synthetic activities.
2. Transport of materials-serving as channels.
3. Cytoplasmic framework for biological activities.
4. Detoxification of poisons and drugs in liver cells of vertebrates.
