Despite getting freedom from colonial rule in 1948, Myanmar earlier referred to as Burma didn’t stay as a democratic country for too long. In 1962, the democratic rule in the country came to an abrupt end with a military coup.
Following which in 1990, after almost 30 years elections were held and the National League of Democracy led by Aung San Suu Kyi came out victorious in the elections but the military leaders of Myanmar did not acknowledge the election results and refused to step down from their post. In the following days, many pro-democracy leaders including Suu Kyi were imprisoned under house arrest by the military leaders. The leaders took away all rights from the people and almost 6-10 lakh people left Myanmar to find shelter in some other countries. The Universal Adult Franchise also is known as the Right to Vote did not exist in the country. There was no freedom of speech or press and overall, no one had the right to raise questions against the leaders of the ruling party.
Additional Information Suu Kyi still continued her campaign for democracy despite getting suppressed and her struggles won international recognition and she was also awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.
Note Myanmar was governed by a small military elite for decades. The general public accused them of acting solely in their interests. In 2008, with the introduction of a new constitution, a dramatic and significant development occurred which created 14 new states, regional governments, and parliaments along with a promise of providing democratic participation.
