Question

Given the diagram of two elements X and Y.

a) Identify elements X and Y.

b) Do these elements belong to the same group? Explain.

c) Which element is more electropositive in nature? Why?

Answer

a) Element X is Sodium (Na), because it has 11 electrons in its shells.

Element Y is Lithium (Li), because it has 3 electrons in its shells.

b) Yes, these two elements belong to the same group. We know that in a group, the outermost number of electrons is same. Here, both Sodium and Lithium have 1 electron in their outermost shell. Hence, they both belong to same group.

c) Sodium is more electropositive.

Electropositive elements are those elements which have tendency to lose electron. Here, both Sodium and Lithium are metals and both are electropositive. But, since, size of sodium is larger than the size of lithium, it will show a tendency to lose electrons more than lithium. Relate it that larger the distance from the nucleus, less the nuclear force would be. Hence, sodium is more electropositive.
