The surface of the brain is folded into ridges or convolutions called gyri and furrows or grooves called sulci. They increase the surface area of the brain to accommodate more nerve cells. A higher number of convolutions leads to greater intelligence.

GROVES AND RIDGES:

The ridges are called Gyri and the grooves are called Sulci. The main function of these ridges and grooves is to increase the surface area of the cerebrum such that it can accommodate more number of neurons.
