N is 7 so electronic configuration=2,5
so valency is 3

chlorine is 17
EC = 2,8,7
so valency=1

Valency of an element is determined by the help of its electronic configuration. So you have to first determine the electronic configuration(electron distribution in different shells of atom) with the help of their atomic numbers.

1. Atomic number of N = 7

Electronic configuration = 2,5

Now for attaining noble gas configuration it will gain three electrons hence its valency is 3.

2. Atomic number of Cl = 17

Electronic configuration = 2,8,7

For attaining noble gas configuration it will gain one electron, hence, its valency is 1.
