The troposphere is thinner at the poles andthicker at the equator. The average thicknessof the tropical troposphere is roughly 7 kilometers greater than the averagetropospheric thickness at the poles

Troposphere and other atmospheric divisions (like stratosphere, mesosphere thermosphere, exosphere) are based upon temperature differences as ones moves away from the surface. The troposphere is thicker over the equator because the atmosphere below at the equator is much warmer. So it requires the more thickness of the troposphere so that the atmosphere could cool down to a similar degree. Because when you reach the stratopause (boundary between troposphere and stratosphere), the temperature needs to be Zero degrees. From poles, only a little thickness is required for this temperature change to occur (as temperature needs to drop from about 3-10 degrees to negative) but in equator this needs to drop from about 40 to negative. Hence the thickness of the troposphere is the greatest at equator.

hope it helps!
