Answer:

An abbreviation (from Latin brevis, meaning short) is a shortened form of a word or phrase. Usually, but not always, it consists of a letter or group of letters taken from the word or phrase. For example, the word abbreviation can itself be represented by the abbreviation abbr., abbrv. or abbrev. –

Answer:

Abbreviation is a long word only then it will find itself the need for a shortened form of itself and for all other similar long words !!

Jokes apart…

Abbreviation is formed from the original word brevis. Brevis is a Latin word which means short of any other word, phrase or even sentences. These are formed as per the convenience of the language users.

Brevis got a prefix ‘ad’.. which means towards and then ‘ated’ was added to show past tense. The past tense tells us it is already shortened.

But ad+ brevio+ated the was difficult to say as the d and b were next to each other, so later speakers conveniently changed the ‘d’ to a ‘b’

ab means away, exact opposite of towards, though…like in absent, abstain,

Thus was born or rather evolved abbreviation.

Abbreviation itself has many abbreviations..

Abbrv, Abbv, abbrev…

Hope it helps..☺️☺️☺️
