1. Fill in the blanks :

(i) The degree of a non - zero constant polynomial is \sf\:zero .

Explanation :

A non zero constant polynomial is of the form \sf\:f(x)=c where , c is a non zero real number .

If 5 be a non - zero constant polynomial then it could be written as \sf\:5x^{0} . Clearly the highest degree of this polynomial is 0 ( zero ) .

(ii) A polynomial having three terms is called \sf\:trinomial .

Example :

  • \sf\:4x^{2} +2x +7 it has three terms i.e., \sf\:4x^{2} , \sf\:2x and \sf\:7 , therefore this polynomial is known as trinomial.

(iii) A polynomial of degree two is called a \sf\:quadratic polynomial.

Example :

  • \sf\:2x^{2} +7 it has highest power as 2 , therefore this polynomial is known as quadratic polynomial .

(iv) A polynomial of degree \sf\:one is called a linear polynomial.

Example :

  • 5x + 2 is a linear polynomial since its highest degree is 1 .

2. Find the degree of each of the following polynomials :

(i) \sf\:t^{5}-t^{4}+5

  • Highest degree here = 5 .

(ii) \sf\:2x^{8}+y^{3}-y^{2}+2

  • Highest degree here = 8 .

(iii) \sf\:2x

  • Highest degree here = 1 .

(iv) \sf\:2

  • Highest degree here = 1 .

3. Classify the following polynomials as monomial, binomial or trinomial :

(i) \sf\:5x^{2} -3x^{2} +6

  • It's a Trinomial since it has three terms.

(ii) 7

  • It's a monomial since it has only one term.

(iii) \sf\:1 -x^{3}

  • It's a binomial since it has two terms.

(iv) 38

  • It's a monomial since it has only one term.

(v) \sf\:7x^{2}

  • It's a monomial since it has only one term.

4. Write the coefficient of ' x ' in the following polynomial :

(i) \sf\:4x^{2}-\frac{3}{2} x-7

  • Here the coefficient of x is \sf\:(-\frac{3}{2}) .

(ii) \sf\:\sqrt{5}x

  • Here the coefficient of x is \sf\:\sqrt{5} .

(iii) \sf\:2x

  • Here the coefficient of x is \sf\:2 .

(iv) \sf\:18x^{15}-x^{10}+2x

  • Here the coefficient of x is \sf\:2 .
