  1. The fourth war ended with a result in the overthrow of the house of Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan and the dismantlement of Mysore to the benefit of the British East India Company, which won and took control of much of India. In 1767 Mysore was a powerful state under Hyder Ali.
  2. The First Anglo-Maratha War (1775–1782) was the first of three Anglo-Maratha wars fought between the British East India Company and Maratha Empire in India. The war began with the Treaty of Surat and ended with the Treaty of Salbai.
  3. The Indian states lacked unity. Powerful states such as Punjab, Mysore and the Marathas failed to act unitedly against a common foreign enemy. All of them fell prey to the British policy of 'Divide and Rule'.
  4. The Doctrine of Lapse was an annexation policy purportedly devised by Lord Dalhousie, who was the Governor General for the East India Company in India between 1848 and 1856.
