Postulates of VSEPR theory:
1. VSEPR theory can be explained as:
a. The shape of any molecule can be explained by the repulsion between all the electron pairs that are present in the Valence shell.
b. The repulsion between two lone pairs is greater than the repulsion between a lone pair and a bond pair. Presence of a lone pair on the central atom causes slight distortion of the bond angles from the ideal values.
c. The electronegativity between the central atom and the other atoms determines the magnitude of repulsion between the bonding pair of electrons.
d. Triple bond cause more repulsion than the double bonds. Similarly, double bond causes more repulsion than a single bond.
Postulates of molecular orbital theory:
a. The atomic orbitals combine to form a new orbital known as molecular orbital. As a result the atomic oritals loose their identity.
b. An M. O. gives electron probability distribution around a group of nuclei (as M. O. always contain two nuclei) same as the atomic orbitals.
c. The molecular orbitals are the energy States of a molecule, in which the electrons of the molecule are filled just like in case of atomic orbitals.
