1. Sugar does not conduct electricity because it is an organic compound and covalent in nature, it does not contain ions while the electricity is conducted by ions only so, in salt solution the ions are found which conduct electricity but in sugar solutions the ions are not found and so they do not conduct electricity.
2. Pure water or distilled water does not conduct electricity because it doesn't contain salts in it. To make it conducting, we add a pinch of common salt since salt solutions are good conductors of electricity.
Adding an acid makes the water conduct electricity. Assuming that distilled water is being in the experiment, which is a non conductor of electricity we need to make the water conduct electricity for electrolysis to occur. Hence the acid is added.
3. Cations are positively charged ions and anode are negatively charged ions. On the other hand cathode is negatively charged electrode, and anode is positively charged electrode. We know unlike charges attract. So, cations being positively charged move towards the negative electrode that is cathode, and anions being negatively charged move toward the positive electrode that is anode.
4. The rod of impure copper plate should be connected to the positive terminal of the battery. Because when electric current is passed through the copper sulphate solution it dissociate into copper and sulphate ions.
