1. The gap is left between the rails to provide a space for the iron metal to expand and contract during the summer and winter season due to the change in the temperatures. If the gap is not left in between then the rails will bend more and cause derailing of the trains.

2. The one end of a steel grider is not fixed because it expand on heating and contract on cooling and due to this the bridge may break or fall so to avoid this small space are left in between for expansion and contraction.

3. Mercury is the only metal in liquid state at room temperature. It's used in thermometers because it has high coefficient of expansion. Hence, the slightest change in temperature is notable when it's used in a thermometer. It also has a high boiling point which makes it very suitable to measure higher temperatures.
