Student A : Fe + S physical mixture
Student B : some Iron and Sulfur get converted ?
Fe (s) + S (s) + heat ==> Fe S (s) ? black or brown color?
Fe2 O3, FeO (s) & SO2 (g) are also formed perhaps.
So the mixture contains Fe, S, Fe S
1) Adding C S2 to part of their product.
Student A: Fe + S + C S2 (l) ==> no chemical reaction perhaps.
Sulphur dissolves in CS2 solution. Iron does not.
Student B : FeS (s) + C S2 (l) ===> no reaction
2) Adding Sulfuric acid.
Student A: Fe (s) + H2 SO4 (aq) ==> Fe SO4 (s) + H2 (g)
S (s) + H2 SO4 (aq) => probably no reaction.
student B: FeS (s) + H2 SO4 (aq) => FeSO4 (s/aq) + H2 S (g)
or, FeS + H2 SO4 (aq) => Fe2 (SO4)3 + H2S (unbalanced)
