Hey mate ,

The animals which undergo external fertilisation lay hundreds of egg because they lay eggs in the open surrounding which have no real protection and have much more chances of getting destroyed by another animal like fish or any other organism !!

Thus there is a very less probability that the new organism would survive. So by giving such a large number of eggs the chances of survival of eggs increase !!
