Sol:
Let the present age of son be 'x' years.
Age of the son 2 years ago = (x - 2) years.
Age of the father 2 years ago = 3(x - 2) years.
Age of the son after 2 years = (x + 2) years
Age of the father after 2 years = 5(x + 2) / 2
⇒ 3(x - 2) + 4 = 5(x + 2) / 2
⇒ 6x -4 = 5x + 10
⇒ x = 14
Therefore, the present age of the son is 14 years.
Age of the father 2 years ago = 3(14 - 2) years = 36 years.
Present age of the father = 36 + 2 = 38 years.

Let the present age of father be x yrs.
and present age of son be y yrs.

NOW,
1st case
x-2=3(y-2)
x-2=3y-6
x-3y= -6+2

x-3y = -4                         .....(1)
Multiplying by 2 on both sides
2(x-3y= -4)
2x-6y= -8                        ........(2)
2nd case
2(x+2)=5(y+2)
2x+4=5y+10
2x-5y= 10-4
2x-5y=6                         ........(3)

now, from (2) and(3)

2x- 6y = -8
2x- 5y = 6
(-)  (+)   (-)
__________
0  -y = -14
__________
y=14
put y=14 in (1)
x-3(14)= -4
x-42= -4
x= -4 +42
x=38
therefore, present age of father is 38 yrs. and present  age of son is 14 yrs.
