(i) The leaf is boiled in alcohol to remove the chlorophyll of the leaves . This is because if chlorophyll is not removed , then we cannot perform the starch test and identify our aim . Alcohol not only removes the chrolophyll part but also the green colour from the lead which helps us to easily distinguish the parts .

(ii) The leaf is dipped in iodine solution to examine the presence of starch in it . It also kills bacteria present in the leaves . This helps us to check that the experiment is carried neatly and accurately. If starch is present then the experiment will not show the accurate results.
