The change in velocity of the car is = 40 m/s .
Velocity is a vector quantity which depends both on magnitude and the direction .
In the above scenario , the magnitude remained the same but the direction changed by 180 degrees .....
V¹ = 20 m/s
V² = 20 m/s cos a ( angle between the two vectors ) = -20
dv = V² - V²
= ( -20 ) - ( 20 )
= -40 m/s
The negative sign indicates that the car is moving in the opposite direction relative to the initial direction .
