It is because iodine is a sublime substance that is, it is converted directly into vapours when it is heated without going into the liquid state. Whereas soil in non sublime. Therefore when the mixture is heated iodine will sublime and soil will be left behind separating the both. This is how Nyasa can separate the iodine crystals from the soil samples.
