DC generators are less efficient than AC generators because DC generators require the use of a commutator and brushes. These cause losses. A generator naturally generates AC in the rotating coils. This was converted to DC by the invention of the commutator and brushes. This was the only way to create DC from AC generated in the rotating coils back then. Today the AC can be rectified to DC by diodes easily so the Alternator is now used in preference to a DC generator.

Transformer were invented and this enabled AC to become the electrical current of choice because now electricity could be transmitted up to hundreds of kilometers from the generator station by stepping the voltage up much higher and then down again at the user end to reduce the IR losses. (V= IR losses are the current multiplied by the resistance. This gives us the voltage lost due to the current flowing).
