A1) The pontoon bridge is a temporary bridge formed for serving the purpose of carrying loads and people across a water body in this case the river. People  are crossing it because they have been evacuated from their cities and towns as there is a threat of war going on.

A3) The speaker in the above extract is the author who is the soldier who was sent by his company to check from the other side of the bridge is the enemy( the fascists) is approaching and report back with the information to his platoon.

A4) The first question that the speaker asks the old man is that where is he from to which the old man replies that he is from a town named San Carlos and smiled while telling him so as it was his native town and he had pleasure in remembering all the good time he had spent there with his family and all the memories he had made.

A5) The old man was the last one to leave his town this was because he was too old and was not ready to leave the only family he had, the animals, behind but he had to evacuate the town when the threat of war began hovering about his time and he was made to leave his town and asked to relocate. The old man had steel rimmed spectacles  and very dusty clothes and sat by the side of the road.
