Soil nutrients are typically added from exterior in order to sustain crop yields. In this approach we are thinking the system to be completely open to losses and unsustainable.
On the other hand, if one can wisely and scientifically manipulate cropping systems and crop rotations, such as legumes, grains and cover crops, can better manage soil health and the crops grown on it. This an ecosystem approach which relies on nutrient cycling.
