Carbon and its compounds form covalent bonds which are formed by sharing of electrons among same or different molecules.

Methane: Carbon has four un-shared electrons in its valence shell. To complete its octet, carbon needs four more electrons. This is donated by four other hydrogen atoms, forming four covalent bonds.

Covalent compounds can be formed because since the valency of carbon is 4 it can neither donate them or gain 4 electrons as it would require a huge amount of energy....so it forms bonds by sharing of electrons either by other carbon atoms or hydrogen, oxygen, halogens, etc.

example of covalent compound is acetylene, methanol, etc.
